The difference between Bullet Connector and Spade Connector

The difference between Bullet Connector and Spade Connector

Both bullet terminals and spade terminals are types of electrical connectors used for wire termination. So what is the difference between these two types of connectors?

Bullet Connectors And Spade Connectors

What is a Bullet Connector?

A bullet connector is a common cylindrical quick-disconnect electrical connector, consisting mainly of two parts: the male bullet and the female bullet (socket).

Structure of a Bullet Connector

Male Bullet

  • Cylindrical in shape (resembling a bullet).

  • Features a protruding metal pin with raised ribs or grooves to ensure a secure fit.

  • One end is designed for wire termination (via crimping or soldering), while the other end is inserted into the female socket.

Female Bullet (Socket)

  • Contains an internal spring-like metal sleeve that tightly grips the male bullet to provide reliable electrical contact.

Insulation Sleeve

  • Typically made of plastic or rubber.

  • Covers the metal contact to prevent short circuits and oxidation.

Locking Mechanism (Optional)

  • Some models include latch clips or spring locks to enhance connection stability.

What is a Spade Connector?

A Spade Connector is a common electrical terminal used to connect a wire quickly and reliably to a screw-type or post-type terminal.
Its shape resembles a small fork or U-shaped blade, hence the term spade.

Basic Structure of a Spade Connector

Spade/Fork

  • A U-shaped metal piece that slides under screws or terminal posts.

Crimp Barrel

  • A cylindrical rear section where the wire is inserted and secured by crimping.

Insulation Sleeve (Optional)

  • A plastic or heat-shrink sleeve covering the crimp barrel for insulation and protection.

Neck / Transition Section

  • A short metal section connecting the spade to the crimp barrel, providing structural stability.

Differences in Usage Scenarios

  • Spade Connector:
Used in fixed installations, terminal blocks, and internal equipment wiring.

  • Bullet Connector:
Used in automotive harnesses, motorcycles, and locations requiring frequent disconnection.

Connection Characteristics

  • Spade Connector:
Fixed connection, secured by screws, offering high stability.

  • Bullet Connector:
Plug-and-socket design, allowing quick connection and disconnection.
